What Favorite Food From Your Past Do You Miss the Most?
Growing up in Indiana and now living in the Southwest, I’ve discovered there are quite a few foods from home that simply aren’t easy to find here.
One I missed while serving in the Navy wasn’t necessarily because it was the greatest food ever. It was because of the memories attached to it: White Castle.
When we were little and visited our grandmother in Indianapolis, we would sometimes stop at White Castle on the way home. To a child, that little building that actually looked like a white castle seemed almost magical. And then came the best part: we were allowed two hamburgers each! Our family didn’t have a lot of extra money, so that was a real treat.
There are other foods I still miss too. Mixed fruit jelly is one. You can find almost every flavor imaginable, but mixed fruit seems to have disappeared. And then there are Indiana breaded tenderloin sandwiches. Culver’s comes the closest where I live, but it still doesn’t compare to those enormous, plate-sized tenderloins you can get back in Indiana.
Funny how sometimes it isn’t just the food we miss. It’s the people, places, and memories that came with it.
