If I could relive one year of my life, I’m not sure I would choose an entire year.
There are moments I would love to return to, though. I’d love to spend another day planting a garden and flowers with Grandfather Arthur, work on my free throw shot again, or stand quietly watching the sun set over the Pacific Ocean.
But there is one moment I would especially like to have back.
My father was the next youngest of ten children, so by the time we grandchildren came along, Grandma West was already quite old. She died when I was very young, and over the years I’ve learned more and more about who she was.
If I could go back, I wouldn’t need a whole year.
I would choose just one day with her.
I’d sit beside her and ask all the questions I was too young to know to ask. I’d listen to her stories, learn more about her life, and try to understand the woman behind the memories passed down through our family.
And maybe I’d discover how much of her still lives in me.
That one day would be enough.
