One of the tropes that annoys me most is when a woman is portrayed as helpless, foolish, or incapable of making a good decision simply so the male hero can swoop in and save her. I don’t mind a character needing help. Everyone does sometimes. What bothers me is when the woman seems to lose all common sense, strength, or competence just to make the hero look better.
Give me women who can think, fight back, make mistakes, solve problems, and contribute to their own survival. They can still fall in love with the dashing hero, but I want them standing beside him, not waiting around for him to rescue them.
That trope will make me lose interest in a book or movie very quickly.
