I don’t think I can narrow it down to just one.
My grandfather, Arthur, taught me that I could do almost anything if I was willing to try. He gave me the courage to step outside what my family expected of me and believe I was capable of more than I sometimes thought I was.
He also gave me my love of the outdoors, woodworking, gardening, and nature. Some of my happiest memories are tied to the things he taught me and the way he encouraged me to explore, build, grow, and pay attention to the world around me.
Years later, a good friend taught me something very different, but just as important. She helped me understand that I needed to take care of myself, too.
For a long time, I believed loving my family meant doing everything for them, giving everything I had, and always putting myself last. I eventually learned that giving everything away isn’t necessarily love. Sometimes it means losing yourself while trying to take care of everyone else.
My grandfather taught me to believe in myself and to appreciate the world around me.
My Friend taught me not to forget myself.
Both relationships taught me lessons I still carry with me today.
