My Grandfather’s Walnut Table
It measures about five feet by three feet and stands roughly four feet tall. Made of solid walnut, it is more than a piece of furniture to me. My grandfather, Arthur Lisby, built it when he was young and starting at Rose Polytechnic Institute, now known as Rose-Hulman Institute of Technology.
I bought it at the auction of my grandparents’ farm and home. After it became mine, I asked Grandfather to sign the inside of the drawer. That signature makes it even more precious.
The table has followed me through many trials and tribulations. Through moves, changes, and difficult days, it has stood steady when I needed it.
Sometimes I look at it and think I should refinish it. Then I hesitate. There is something about touching the same wood my grandfather shaped so many years ago that makes me want to leave it just as it is.
Maybe someday I’ll be ready. For now, I’m happy to have it, along with his signature tucked inside the drawer.
What do you own that carries a piece of someone you love?
